Identity, nation‐state and football in Spain. the evolution of nationalist feelings in Spanish Football

2007

This essay shows the importance of the identity component in the development of Spanish football from its birth at the beginning of the twentieth century, when football was organized at a regional level, until the present time when football reflects the democratic and post‐national Spain created after the arrival of democracy in the last quarter of the twentieth century. The essay expounds the existence of four periods in the development of the nationalistic feelings with which Spanish football has been embodied: the pre‐national or regional period, the period of Spanish nationalization, the period of strengthening of peripheral nationalisms and the post‐national period. In order to explain…

Nationalisation, Localisation and Globalisation in Finnish Higher Education

2004

This article analyses and discusses the interplay between the social processes of nationalisation, localisation and globalisation in a single European nation state. The view of nationalisation put forward draws on a national case study based on historical and sociological research findings. The second part of the article presents a case study of the nature of globalisation and localisation in an average Finnish university. The article shows that nationalisation of Finnish higher education has created a cultural understanding of higher education institutions important for competition with other nations. As for localisation, on the one hand higher education institutions support their local co…

Enrique Dupuy de Lôme: sus Estudios sobre el Japón (1895) y el Imperialismo decimonónico / Enrique Dupuy de Lôme: his ‘Estudios sobre el Japón’ (1895…

2017

This study analyzes the work ‘Estudios sobre el Japon’ (Studies about Japan), written by the Spanish diplomat Enrique Dupuy de Lome in 1895. These three elements (work, author and date) show us interconnections between the United States, Japan and Spain by the end of the 19th century. During this time, imperialism and nation states were taking part in the international context. From the Spanish point of view, these elements constituted a threat to the legitimacy of Spain in the Atlantic and Pacific´s colonies, or as Dupuy argues, a danger. Although our priority is to analyze Estudios sobre el Japon providing a chronology of the development of the different parts of the book, at the end, it …

Improving Small Molecule pKa Prediction Using Transfer Learning With Graph Neural Networks

2022

Enumerating protonation states and calculating microstate pKa values of small molecules is an important yet challenging task for lead optimization and molecular modeling. Commercial and non-commercial solutions have notable limitations such as restrictive and expensive licenses, high CPU/GPU hour requirements, or the need for expert knowledge to set up and use. We present a graph neural network model that is trained on 714,906 calculated microstate pKa predictions from molecules obtained from the ChEMBL database. The model is fine-tuned on a set of 5,994 experimental pKa values significantly improving its performance on two challenging test sets. Combining the graph neural network model wit…

Development discourses of the low human development index : countries in UN post-2015 discussion

2015

This study is about development discourses and agents of the countries with low Human Development Index (HDI) in Africa. It is based on six UN Post-2015 national consultations. These six nations are Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Liberia and Zambia. The criteria of data selection involve the level of HDI, language, format of the report and geographical location. The idea about development as discursive constructed social reality is at the focus of theoretical framework. The method is Discourse Analysis (DA) with some Foucauldian characteristics. The research questions are: What kind of specific development discourses and agentive roles are there in pol…

The Short and Intense Post-Nationalist Period in Finnish Higher Education

2020

This chapter presents the transition from a nationalist to post-nationalist period since the 1980s as the increasing systematic mobility and European cooperation as well as the fall of the Soviet Union turned Finnish higher education towards Western cooperation. The new internationalization strategies first aimed at founding mobility programmes for higher education and then particularly English medium study programmes. Post-national nation state emerges in the analysis mainly as an actor on the global economy. The discourses of competition and success in the global markets are interwoven with discourses of protection of the nation state. The use of English as an ostensibly self-evident and …

The Rise of the Nation-State and Free Transit

2017

With a focus on Anthony Pagden, this section delves into the conquest of Americas, and explains how the manipulation of the concept of hospitality legitimated the subsequent dispossession of aboriginal lands. In part, this was because Spain colonized this continent as Rome did Europe, but, and most important, hospitality played a vital role subordinating the indigenous to European archetype, endorsing and granting legitimacy to Spain’s rule over this New World. In so doing, hospitality not only accompanied the ideological discourse of nationhood, but free transit became the touchstone of the West.

Geopolitics of the Cosmopolis

2009

Through an analysis of a speech held by Finnish Minister of Defence Jyri Hakamies at CSIS in Washington in 2007, the article scrutinizes the new emergence of “geopolitics” in international politics. Although its novelty is debatable, in this new geopolitical discourse the main focus is not related to the spatial borders of a nation state but instead to securing territory beyond these borders. It seems that “common values”, basically undefined but allegedly including such ideas like democracy, are related to this new form of “geopolitics”. In contrast to traditional geopolitics and identity politics, the global or cosmopolitical “us” defending common values seems to be a changing coalition a…
